Biography

Paul Hewson, aka Bono, was born in Dublin on May 10, 1960, and is as well known as the lead singer of Irish band U2 as he is for his social and political commitments. His adventure with U2, which began in 1976, took off in the early 1980s with iconic albums such as Boy (1980), October (1981), War (1983) and The Unforgettable Fire (1984), produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. Since the international success of The Joshua Tree (1987) and anthems such as "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", U2 have established themselves as one of the biggest names in rock, moving from large concert halls to stadiums. At the same time, the singer - who went by Bono Vox in his early days - became a spokesman for great causes, taking part in the first Band Aid in 1985 and the next two in 2004 and 2014, as well as in "Sun City", produced by Artists United Against Apartheid. His voice grew in stature, and the artist became an interlocutor for major personalities, from heads of state to the Pope. In 2002, he founded the organization DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa), then co-founded One Campaign and the fair trade label RED. Although he has hardly recorded a solo album outside U2, Bono has nevertheless taken part in numerous recording projects, such as the Passengers album in 1995, featuring the duet "Miss Sarajevo " with Luciano Pavarotti, duets with Johnny Cash, Sinéad O'Connor, Mylène Farmer (unreleased), Bob Dylan, Wyclef Jean, Green Day, Alicia Keys, K'naan, Martin Garrix and Lil Wayne on "The Days" in 2025. In his own name, he contributes to the soundtracks of the films Honeymoon in Vegas (1992), In the Name of the Father (1994), The Millon Dollar Hotel (2001) and Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark (2011), and to various compilations including tributes to the songs of Leonard Cohen, Marvin Gaye and Jimmie Rodgers. In 2022, he published his memoirs Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, giving rise to a solo reading tour.
