Biography

The eldest son of reggae legend Bob Marley, Ziggy and his siblings Stephen, Sharon and Cedella grew up singing together as the Melody Makers, and came to attention when they performed at their father's funeral in 1981. The band's early albums veered towards a clean pop sound which drew derision from the purists, but when they switched labels to Virgin Records the change resulted in the classic album Conscious Party (1988), which won the Grammy Award for Reggae Album of the Year and produced the hit Tomorrow's People. One Bright Day (1989) and Jahmeka (1991) also fared well, as Ziggy brought the spiritual, political and musical beliefs of his father to a new generation. He has gone on to work for the United Nations, UNICEF and campaign for the legalisation of marijuana, and after the Melody Makers disbanded in 2000 he re-established his father's Tuff Gong label and released four solo albums; including the children's record Family Time (2009) - which won him his fifth Grammy and featured Jack Johnson, Willie Nelson and Paul Simon.
