Biography
Arnold Lawrence Finkelstein (July 10, 1938 â April 22, 2005), performing as Arnie Lawrence, was an American modern jazz tenor saxophonist, composer, and music educator from Brooklyn. Lawrence studied clarinet before switching to saxophone, debuting at Birdland at age 17. In 1966, he recorded with Chico Hamilton on the album The Dealer. Lawrence served as a soloist on The Tonight Show between 1967 and 1972. His debut album as leader, You're Gonna Hear from Me, appeared in 1966. He joined Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1974 and toured with Liza Minnelli in 1978. Lawrence composed the symphony Red, White and Blues, which featured soloists Dizzy Gillespie and Julius Baker. In 1986, he founded the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. Lawrence relocated to Jerusalem in 1997, where he established the International Center for Creative Music. He died in Jerusalem.
