Slavko Avsenik, born November 26, 1929, in Begunje, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, was a Slovenian composer and accordionist. He initially pursued ski jumping but taught himself to play the piano accordion during military service. In 1953, he formed the Slavko Avsenik Trio with guitarist Mitja Butara and bassist Borut Finzgar. With his brother Vilko Ovsenik, Avsenik founded a new group, which became known as the Gorenjski Quintet, creating the "Oberkrainer sound." Their breakthrough hit "Trompetenecho" (1954) became an evergreen in folk music. Avsenik's solo discography includes the albums Slavko Avsenik Präsentiert Die Volksmusikanten-Parade (1992) and the compilation Goldene Klänge Aus Oberkrain (1991). He passed away on July 2, 2015, having sold over 36 million records.
