Biography

Dominican singer-songwriter and producer Antony Santos (May 5, 1967), also known as “El Mayimbe,” is often credited with shaping the sound of modern bachata during the 1990s with his romantic lyrics and intricate guitar licks. Born into a very poor family from Las Matas de Santa Cruz, he emerged into the bachata scene in the early 90s as the guira player for Luis Vargas. Following his turbulent exit from the group, Antony Santos made his official debut with the hit single “Voy Pa’ Allá,” included in his studio debut La Chupadera (1992). In the years that followed, he established himself as one of the top-selling bachata artists not just in his native country, but also in the rest of Latin America, releasing classic albums such as Corazón Bonito (1993), Cójelo Ahí (1994), and El Mayimbe… Y Nada Más (1995). All of these releases created a blueprint for the next generation of bachata artists, including Romeo and Lenny Santos from Aventura, with whom Antony Santos has collaborated a few times over the years. He has also collaborated with other artists outside the genre, such as the reggaetonero Ozuna on the track “Señor Juez” in 2021.
