Anna Claudia Russell-Brown, known as Anna Russell, was born on December 27, 1911 in Maida Vale, London, England. She began her career with opera engagements and folk singing appearances on BBC radio in 1931. After moving to Canada in 1939, she started performing on local radio stations. In 1948, Russell made her New York City debut with a one-woman show that she toured internationally. She released several albums including Anna Russell Sings? (1953). Russell's notable works include her humorous analysis of Richard Wagnerâs Der Ring des Nibelungen, titled "The Ring of the Nibelungs (An Analysis)". She appeared on Broadway in shows like Anna Russell's Little Show (1953) and performed at venues such as New Yorkâs Carnegie Hall. Russell received the Canadian Women's Press Club Award in 1956 for being the best Canadian comedy writer of the year. She passed away on October 18, 2006.
