Biography

Born in Brooklyn, New York on April 14, 1972, Andrea Martin honed her creative skills as a teenager. After graduating from the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in 1990, she started working as a demo singer. That led to a gig writing songs for a publishing company. Her first breakout hit as a songwriter was Monica’s “Before You Walk Out of My Life”, which topped the R&B charts and hit number 7 on the pop chart in 1995. Hit songs followed for a variety of artists including Silk (“Hooked on You”), Toni Braxton (I Love Me Some Him”), and SWV (You’re the One”). She had the biggest success of her career to that point in 1997 when En Vogue took her song, “Don’t Let Go (Love)” to number 2 on the Hot 100 and number 1 on the R&B charts. She released her soul-inflected debut album, The Best of Me, in 1998. She would continue to write songs for others, most notably Leona Lewis (“Better In Time”) and Melanie Fiona (“It Kills Me”).
