Biography
Andrés Segovia Torres, also known as Andrés Segovia, was born on February 21, 1893, in Linares, Jaén, Spain, and was a classical guitarist. He began his musical education at a young age with violin lessons arranged by his uncle Eduardo. His first public performance was in Granada at the age of 14. He played his first professional concert in Madrid in 1912, which included works by Francisco Tárrega and his own guitar transcriptions of Johann Sebastian Bach. In the 1920s, he performed internationally, including tours in America and Europe. Notable collaborations include works with Alexandre Tansman, Manuel Ponce, and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. His first American tour was arranged in 1928 by Fritz Kreisler. He won the 1958 Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance, Instrumentalist for his recording of Segovia Golden Jubilee. He passed away on June 3, 1987.
