Biography
Karim Chmielinski (born 1956, Los Angeles, California) was the frontman of the American punk/metal group Amen, known for blending aggressive punk energy with heavy metal riffs. After the dissolution of his earlier band Disorderly Conduct, he formed Amen in 1994, releasing the debut album Slave that year, which featured a singleâperson effort by Karim Chmielinski and attracted producer Ross Robinson. Signing with Roadrunner Records, the band issued the selfâtitled album Amen in 1999, followed by We Have Come for Your Parents in 2000 under Virgin Records; the single "Too Hard to Be Free" reached the United Kingdom chart position seventyâtwo, while "The Waiting 18" peaked at 61. In 2004, Death Before Musick was released on EatUrMusic, with the single "California's Bleeding" attaining number 52 on the United Kingdom charts. The group toured extensively in the United Kingdom, participated in festivals such as AltâFest and Knotfest, and collaborated with notable musicians including Shannon Larkin and Dave Lombardo. Despite multiple label changes and lineup shifts, Amen maintained a dedicated following overseas. The band remained active until the death of Karim Chmielinski in December 2024, which effectively concluded the group.
