Biography

Alex Welsh, born on July 9, 1929, in Edinburgh, Scotland, was a jazz musician who played cornet and trumpet, and was also a bandleader and singer. He began his career playing with local bands and moved to London in the early 1950s to form his own group. Alex Welsh's band released several records starting in 1955 on the Decca label, including "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" and "Blues My Naughtie Sweetie Gives to Me". In 1961, their single "Tansy" peaked at number 45 on the UK singles chart. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, Alex Welsh's band collaborated with notable jazz figures such as Earl Hines and Ruby Braff, and toured extensively. He released several albums, including At Home With...Alex Welsh and His Band (1968) and The Roaring Twenties (1970). Alex Welsh continued to perform regularly at public house venues across the UK until his death on June 25, 1982, in London.
