Biography

Atomic, a Norwegian-Swedish jazz quintet, was formed in 1999 by musicians from Swedish bands Fire House and the Fredrik Norén Band. The group included trumpeter Magnus Broo, saxophonist Fredrik Ljungkvist, pianist Håvard Wiik, bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love, who was later replaced by Hans Hulbækmo in 2014. Atomic emerged as a reaction to ECM-style jazz prevalent in Scandinavia, drawing influences from American free jazz of the 1960s. Atomic’s debut album Feet Music was released in 2001 on Jazzland Records. The band gained recognition through extensive touring and festival appearances across Europe and the USA. Notable releases include Boom Boom(2002/2003), Happy New Ears! (2006), and The Bikini Tapes (2005). Their discography spans over a decade, with significant albums like Retrograde (2008) and Pet Variations (2018/2019).
