Biography
Born in Brixton, south London, British rapper and producer AJ Tracey (born Ché Wolton Grant on March 4, 1994) grew up in a musical environment with a Trinidadian rapper father and a Welsh DJ mother. He studied criminology before devoting himself to music. Fascinated by the first generation of grime artists, he took over and recorded two mixtapes under the pseudonym Looney: Didn't Make the Cut (2012) and No More Looney (2014). While continuing to work for pirate radio stations, he successively released five EPs in three years, from The Front (2015) to Secure the Bag! (2017). AJ Tracey was then noticed by the BBC, which placed him among the greatest hopes of British rap. In May 2018, after the singles "Quarterback (Secure the Bag!)" (No. 75) and "Mimi" (No. 51), the duet "Butterflies", in collaboration with Not3s, broke into the Top 20 at No. 19 on the sales charts, followed by "Lo(v/s)er" (No. 38) and "Doing It" (No. 56). In February 2019, his namesake Afrobeat and dancehall-influenced debut album unveils a new single entitled "Psych-Out!" (charted at No. 27). In 2021, he released the album Flu Game , featuring a number of hits, including "Dinner Guest" with MoStack (#5), "West Ten" with Mabel (#5), "Bringing It Back" with Gigga D (#5), "Anxious " (#34) and "Little More Love" (#29). His third album, Don't Die Before You're Dead, was released in 2025. The project features collaborations with Jorja Smith, Nemzzz, Headie One and Aitch, among others.
