Biography

Aila Trio is a Norwegian experimental free-jazz group. The trio was founded by tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Karl Hjalmar Nyberg, drummer Andreas Winther (Megalodon Collective, Kjetil Mulelid Trio, KALLE) and Swedish-born/Netherlands-based double bassist/composer Georgia Wartel Collins. Growing up around live music – her father is the founder of Amsterdam, Netherlands jazz club BrÖtz – Collins was influenced by improv and free jazz. She took up the double bass and began exploring all the musical possibilities of the instrument. She met like-minded free jazz musicians Nyberg and Winther and formed the Aila Trio. They released their debut album, Aila Trio, in 2018. Collins has continued her musical studies, graduating from the Conservatory in Trondheim, Norway in 2019. Alongside Aila Trio, she has also worked with other outfits including Trondheim Jazz Orchestra.
