Biography

Formed in 2007 in Tokyo, Japan, 80Kidz is an electro group whose mix of new rave, house, techno, and synthesized pop earned the band an international audience during the early 21st century. Originally a DJ trio, the group's three founding members — Jun, Ali, and Mayu — spent two years building their audience online, where they released viral hits like "Life Begins at Eighty" and remixed material by artists like Black Kids, Ayumi Hamasaki, and CSS. The band's full-length debut, This Is My Shit, became a crossover hit in Japan upon its 2009 release, climbing to Number 32 on the Oricon album chart and topping the country's iTunes electro chart. Meanwhile, the song "Miss Mars" was included in Kitsuné Maison Compilation 7: The Lucky One, a collection of electronica tracks released in 2009 by the international label Kitsuné. Mayu left the lineup later that year, with 80Kidz rebranding themselves as DJ duo in time for the group's first remix compilation, This Is My Works. Released in December 2009, This Is My Works was followed one year later by Weekend Warrior, which climbed to Number 32 in Japan and topped the Japanese iTunes Charts. After recording 2012's Turbo Town, 2014's FACE, and 2016's Five, 80Kidz released a series of digital EPs during the decade's remaining years, issuing four EPs in 2017 alone.
