Biography

Long Yu, born July 1, 1964 in Shanghai, China, is a conductor who began his musical education with piano studies under his grandfather, composer Ding Shande. He graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1987 and further studied at the Berlin University of the Arts. Yu returned to China and was appointed principal conductor of the Central Opera Theatre in Beijing in 1992. He founded the Beijing Music Festival in 1998 and became its first artistic director. In 2000, he led the China Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra through open auditions, renaming it the China Philharmonic Orchestra. Notable performances include a concert for Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican in 2008 and the BBC Proms in 2014. Yu has also served as music director of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra in 2003 and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in 2009, overseeing significant developments such as the Music in the Summer Air Festival.
