Biography

Ying Huang is a Chinese-American operatic soprano born in 1968 in Shanghai. She studied at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under the musician Zhou Xiaoyan and graduated in 1992. Huang reached wider visibility when she was cast in the title role of the movie Madame Butterfly (1995) directed by Frédéric Mitterrand. This role led to a performance in the Christmas in Vienna (1996) concert alongside Plácido Domingo and Michael Bolton. She made her US operatic debut in 1999 at the Michigan Opera Theater performing the role of Sophie in the opera Werther. Huang made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera on December 29, 2006, performing the role of Pamina in the opera The Magic Flute. Her recording career included the studio recording Bitter Love (1998) and the recording Italian Arias.
