Biography

Alexander Kipnis was born on February 13, 1891, in Zhytomyr, the Russian Empire, and became a bass singer. He began his musical journey as a soprano singer before entering the Warsaw Conservatory at age 19. Alexander Kipnis made his operatic debut in 1915 with the Hamburg Opera. He gained significant stage experience at the Wiesbaden Opera from 1917 to 1922 and later joined the Berlin Staatsoper. In 1923, Alexander Kipnis began a nine-season tenure with the Chicago Civic Opera. He became an American citizen in 1931 following his marriage to Mildred Eleanor Levy. Alexander Kipnis made his Metropolitan Opera debut in New York City in 1940. Notable roles included Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov and Rocco in Beethoven's Fidelio. He passed away on May 14, 1978, in Westport, Connecticut.
