Biography

Yandé Codou Sène, a Senegalese singer from the Serer ethnic group, was born in 1932 at Somb in the Sine-Saloum delta. She began singing as a child and became known for her traditional Serer music, eventually becoming the official griot of President Léopold Sédar Senghor. Despite her early start in music, Sène did not record her first album until 1995 at the age of 65. Her debut recording was Night Sky in Sine Saloum, followed by her breakthrough album Gainde: Voices from the Heart of Africa which she shared with Youssou N'Dour. This collaboration received critical acclaim and showcased her powerful vocals, which were also featured in Safi Faye's 1996 film Mossane. Sène continued to influence Senegambian music and inspired artists like Youssou N'Dour until her death on July 15, 2010.
