Biography
Macfarlane Gregory Anthony Mackey, known professionally as Exuma, and born on February 18, 1942, in Tea Bay, Cat Island, Bahamas, is a musician best known for blending folk, rock, junkanoo, carnival, calypso, reggae, and African music. He began his musical journey by performing with friends and releasing singles under the name Tony McKay in the 1960s. In 1970, Mackey adopted the stage name Exuma and released his self-titled debut album through Mercury Records. This was followed by Exuma II (1970), Do Wah Nanny (1971), Snake (1972), Reincarnation (1972), and Life (1973). Notable songs include "Exuma, the Obeah Man" (1970) and "Damn Fool" (1971). In 1977, he created the musical stage production Junkanoo Drums and became a regular performer at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. By the 1980s, Mackey had founded his own record label, Inagua Records, and moved to New Orleans. He died in Nassau on January 25, 1997.
