Biography
The Winterthur Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1629 by Hans Heinrich Meyer in Switzerland to enhance church singing. It evolved into an instrumental group by the 18th century and was re-established as the Stadtorchester Winterthur in 1875 under Georg Wilhelm Rauchenecker. The orchestra gained international recognition through collaborations with composers like Hindemith and Schoenberg, and over 120 premieres. Notable conductors include Hermann Scherchen. The orchestra has released albums such as Piano Concerto No. 3 C Minor, Op. 37 (1950) and Mendelssohn: Symphonies No. 1 & 5 (2013), and received awards like the ECHO Klassik in 2008 and 2011 for a 19th-century concert recording. The orchestra has also performed under Roberto González-Monjas and other guest conductors, maintaining strong youth engagement through youth operas like Fealan (2009) and Drachencamping (2017).
