Biography

German Wilkins Vélez Ramírez, born 10 March 1953 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, is a Puerto Rican singer whose career spans more than four decades. After growing up in Mexico City and participating in school choirs, he returned to Puerto Rico in 1971 and began studying biology while pursuing music, eventually signing recording contracts and later founding his own label. His early career included Por primera vez (1971) as his first album launch, followed by O tú o nada in the mid‑1970s. Throughout the 1980s he recorded hits including Una historia importante (which featured “Lambada (Llorando Se Fue)” in 1984) and later his version of “Sopa de caracol” in 1991, the latter co‑produced by Emilio Estefan which reached the German Hit Parade list. In 1988 he contributed the title track “Margarita” to the film Salsa and has multiple international hits. His November 2006 release Disco de Oro: Cuatro Décadas de Éxitos y Cinco Nuevas Canciones compiled four decades of work and included a DVD of music videos. German Wilkins Vélez Ramírez has earned more than twenty‑three Gold Record Awards and ten Platinum Record Awards, and his albums and singles have charted in Puerto Rico, Latin America, the United States, and Europe, cementing his status as a prolific figure in popular Latin music
