William Lorenzo Robinson, known as "Weepin'" Willie Robinson, was born on July 6, 1926, in Atlanta, Georgia. He had worked as a sharecropper, soldier, and boxer before beginning his career in the 1950s after securing a steady position as an emcee/comedian at a Trenton, New Jersey nightclub, which led to his singing career. Robinson eventually sang with B.B. King's 21-piece orchestra, and he and King became friends. He settled in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1959 and played in clubs throughout the region. By 2004, he was homeless, prompting musicians and concerned individuals to hold a benefit concert to support him. He passed away on December 30, 2007, at the age of 81, due to a fire accidentally started by a cigarette he had been smoking in bed at his home in Jamaica Plain, Boston.
