Biography

When Eastern Europe awoke from the retreat of the Soviet glacis in 1989, everything had to be rebuilt. For forty years, official Communist culture had tried to eradicate the roots of folk traditions in the countries subjected to its dictates. Warsaw Village Band was born in Poland in March 1997, with the dual aim of rehabilitating Polish folklore and bringing it up to date. This they did masterfully with Hop Sa Sa (1998), Wiosna Ludu (2002), and Wykorzenienie, which won the BBC World Music Award in 2004. Warsaw Village Band introduces elements of hip-hop and world fusion into their increasingly ambitious music. Nord in 2012 happily explores the common roots of Slavic and Nordic music, aided by Swedish band Hedningarna and Native American singer Sandy Scofield.
