Biography

Vladimir Semyonovich Vysotsky, born on January 25, 1938 in Moscow, USSR, was a Soviet poet, actor, singer-songwriter, prose writer, and screenwriter. Vysotsky's breakthrough came with his work at the Taganka Theater and subsequent film appearances. He released notable albums like Underground Soviet Ballads (1972), writing songs that addressed censored themes in the Soviet Union. His final performance was as Hamlet at the Taganka Theater on July 18, 1980. Vysockij died on July 25, 1980, due to heart failure exacerbated by alcoholism and morphine addiction. He received the State Prize of the USSR posthumously in 1987. The outer main-belt asteroid (2374) Vladvysotskij was named in his honor.
