Violeta del Carmen Parra Sandoval, born on October 4, 1917, in San Carlos, Chile, was a Chilean musician and folklorist. Raised in poverty with eight siblings, Parra learned guitar and songwriting at an early age. She began her musical career performing boleros, corridos, and tonadas in local venues. In the late 1930s, she married Luis Cereceda and had two children, Isabel Parra and Ãngel Parra. Parra's breakthrough came with her participation in the International Youth and Student Festival in Warsaw in 1954, followed by tours through Europe. She released several albums during this period, including Cantos De Chile (1980) and Las Ãltimas Composiciones (1998). Her work significantly influenced Chilean folk music, leading to the creation of La Nueva Canción Chilena movement. Parra's visual art was also recognized internationally, with an exhibition at the Louvre in 1964. She tragically took her own life on February 5, 1967.
