Elvira Louise Redd, known professionally as Vi Redd, was born on September 20, 1928, in Los Angeles, California. She began her musical journey influenced by her father, Alton Redd, a prominent figure in the Central Avenue jazz scene. Redd initially played piano but switched to saxophone at age 10 under the guidance of her great aunt Alma Hightower. Redd's career took off in the early 1950s, playing with notable figures such as Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie. She released her debut album Bird Call on United Artists Jazz in 1962, followed by Lady Soul on Atco Records in 1963. Redd also taught and lectured extensively from the 1970s onward, receiving significant recognition including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Jazz Society in 1989 and the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Award from the Kennedy Center in 2001. She passed away on February 6, 2022, at the age of 93.
