Vernon Pelling Elliott, born on July 27, 1912 in Croydon, United Kingdom, was a British bassoonist, conductor, and composer. He began playing the bassoon at an early age and attended Selhurst Grammar School before securing a scholarship to the Royal College of Music. Elliott's professional career started as principal bassoonist with the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra in 1937 and later with Sadler's Wells Opera. During World War II, he served in the Irish Guards band. Post-war, Elliott was a founder member of Walter Leggeâs Philharmonia Orchestra in 1945 and performed in notable works such as Benjamin Brittenâs Peter Grimes (1945) and The Turn of the Screw (1954). He is renowned for his compositions for children's animated television series, notably Ivor the Engine, Noggin the Nog, Pogles' Wood, and Clangers. A compilation album of his work for Clangers was released in 2001. Elliott passed away on October 12, 1996.
