The group quickly gained traction in the early 1980s, becoming one of Iceland's most popular bands during that period. The band also contributed to the compilation Í Upphafi Skyldi Endinn Skoða in 1981. Utangarðsmenn disbanded shortly after their active years but had a brief comeback in 2000 with the release of the compilation album Fuglinn er floginn.
