Biography

Urban Dance Squad, a Dutch rap-rock band from Utrecht, was formed on December 20, 1986. Known for blending heavy rock, funk, soul, rap/hip-hop, reggae, jazz, and ska, they gained prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s through extensive touring. Their debut album Mental Floss for the Globe (1989) received international critical acclaim. The track "Deeper Shade of Soul" reached Number 21 on the Billboard charts in 1991. The band released several influential albums, including Life 'n Perspective of a Genuine Crossover (1991), Persona Non Grata (1994), and Planet Ultra (1996). Their diverse soundscapes and energetic performances were highlighted by tours across Europe, Japan, and the United States. The lineup included Patrick Tilon (Rudeboy Remmington) on rap and vocals, René van Barneveld (Tres Manos) on guitar, Silvano Matadin (Sil) on bass, Michel Schoots (Magic Stick) on percussion, and Arjen de Vreede (DNA) as the DJ. DNA rejoined the band in 1997 for their final album Artantica (1999). Urban Dance Squad disbanded in 2000 following René van Barneveld's departure.
