Biography

Trompies, a South African kwaito music group formed in 1995, originated from the Soweto township. The members, namely Mandla "Spikiri" Mofokeng, Eugene "Donald Duck" Mthethwa, Jairus "Jakarumba" Nkwe, Zynne "Mahoota" Sibika, and Emmanuel "Mjokes" Matsane, grew up together and formed the band after completing their music studies. Trompies released their debut album Sigiya Ngengoma in 1995, marking the beginning of a successful career that has seen them sell over half a million records. Their subsequent albums include Can't Touch This (2007) and Delicious (2014), with the latter nominated for Best Kwaito Album at the 21st South African Music Awards in 2015. Trompies have also been recognized at the 2021 Music Kwaito and House Music Awards, receiving four nominations including Best Kwaito/Gqom Group and Best Kwaito Single. The group is known for addressing social issues through their music, often incorporating vernacular forms of indigenous languages such as Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana, and Zulu.
