Biography

The Rail Band, formed in 1970 in Bamako, Mali, was initially sponsored by the Ministry of Information and the railway administration. The group started as a Latin jazz band at the Buffet Bar of the Station Hotel, integrating local Manding musical styles and Bambara vocals. Their debut album Orchestre Rail-Band De Bamako was released in 1970, followed by Rail Band in 1973. Lead singer Salif Keita left in 1982 for a solo career. Other notable albums include Wale Numa Lombaliya (1977), Affair Social (1979), and Kongo Sigui (2003). Mory Kanté, a key member of the band, passed away in May 2020.
