Trafassi, a SurinameseâDutch group founded in 1981 by former members of The Happy Boys, emerged from a kaseko formation into a multilingual band performing in Sranan Tongo, Dutch, and English. Their breakthrough came with the 1985 single "Wasmasjien", which peaked at number ten on the Dutch Top 40 and received extensive promotion, including an unofficial music video. Subsequent releases such as "Lollypop" and "Punani" followed, though they were initially rejected by the label for not matching the style of "Wasmasjien". In the late 1990s, lead singer Edgar Burgos left, forming a new lineup that continued to perform. Trafassiâs blend of Caribbean rhythms and pop material positioned them as a party band in the Dutch worldâmusic scene.
