Biography

The Toronto Tabla Ensemble, founded in 1991 by Artistic Director Ritesh Das, debuted at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Their first album, Toronto Tabla Ensemble, was released in 1996, followed by Second Palla (1998), Fredance (2000), which was nominated for a Juno Award for Best Global Album in 2000, and Weaving (2001). In 2006, they toured Canada and Australia with Jeff Martin from The Tea Party. The ensemble has created theme music for CBC Radio's Metro Morning and their original music has been featured in numerous films and commercials. In 2016, they celebrated their 25th anniversary with concerts at the Harbourfront Centre, debuting the Toronto Tabla Youth Ensemble. Notable collaborations include work with Japanese Taiko drummer Kiyoshi Nagata and kathak dancer Pandit Chitesh Das, as well as the video "Unexpected Guests" which featured bagpiper Craig Downie from Enter the Haggis.
