Biography
Robert Todd Duncan, born February 12, 1903, in Danville, Kentucky, was an American baritone opera singer. He began studying piano at age five and later sang in church choirs. After earning degrees from Butler University and Columbia University Teachers College, Duncan's breakthrough came in 1934 with Cavalleria rusticana. He was chosen by George Gershwin to create the role of Porgy in Porgy and Bess, which premiered in 1935. In 1945, he became the first African American singer at a major American opera house, the New York City Opera, performing in Pagliacci and Carmen. Duncan also starred in Broadway productions such as Lost in the Stars. Robert Todd Duncan died on February 28, 1998, in Washington D.C.
