Biography

Toadies are an American alternative rock band best known for "Possum Kingdom," a grunge-era radio hit that reached the Top 10 on both America and Canada's rock charts during the mid-1990s. The band was formed in 1989 in Ft. Worth, Texas, by Vaden Todd Lewis, Charles Mooney III, Guy Vaughan, and Lisa Umbarger. Drummer Mark Reznicek replaced Vaughan in 1991, with Darrel Herbert replacing Mooney as the band's lead guitarist. This classic lineup appeared on Rubberneck, Toadies' major-label debut from 1994. A platinum-selling hit, Rubberneck reached number 56 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the grunge classic "Possum Kingdom," which peaked at number 4 on the Alternative Airplay chart in America and became the band's signature song. "Away," the group's follow-up single, reached number 28 on Alternative Airplay. Toadies recorded a second studio album, Feeler, which was rejected by Interscope. Instead, the band released Hell Below/Stars Above in 2001, parted ways with Interscope shortly thereafter, and returned in 2008 with No Deliverance. The album debuted on the Billboard 200 at number 59, marking something of a commercial comeback for Toadies. A re-recorded version of Feeler followed in 2010, the band maintained its status as a cult favorite with releases like 2012's Play.Rock.Music, 2015's Heretics, and 2017's The Lower Side of Uptown. An EP, Damn You All to Hell, followed in 2022, as did a tour in celebration of Rubberneck's twenty-fifth anniversary.
