Biography

Thinking Plague, an American avant-rock group formed in 1982 by guitarist/composer Mike Johnson and bassist Bob Drake in Denver, Colorado. Initially a coalition of musicians rather than a fixed lineup, the band's early recordings were experimental and complex, blending rock, folk, jazz, and classical music. Their debut album A Thinking Plague was released in 1984 on their own label, featuring hand-painted covers and garnering critical acclaim despite its low-tech production. The group's second album, Moonsongs, was released locally in 1986 before being published by Dead Man’s Curve Records the following year. In 1987, Thinking Plague toured with Sonic Youth, and their third album, In This Life, was released on ReR in September 1989. The band continued to release albums, including In Extremis (1998), A History of Madness (2003), Decline and Fall (2012) and Hoping Against Hope (2017), maintaining a reputation for intricate compositions and avant-garde rock.
