Theoretical Girls were a New York-based no wave band formed in 1977 by Glenn Branca and Jeff Lohn. The group emerged from the downtown Manhattan art scene, where Branca and Lohn initially planned to establish a theater group but shifted their focus to music. Theoretical Girls performed around 20 shows, including three in Paris, and released one single, "U.S. Millie" / "You Got Me", on Theoretical Records in 1978. The band's sound blended classical modern composition ideas with punk rock noise music, aligning them with other no wave acts like The Contortions and DNA. Despite their brief existence, which ended in 1981, Theoretical Girls launched the careers of Branca and producer Wharton Tiers. Posthumous releases, including Theoretical Record (2002) on Acute Records, have preserved the band's legacy. In 2023, they were featured at the Centre Pompidou in an exhibition curated by Nicolas Ballet.
