Biography

Thea Gilmore is a British singer-songwriter known for her distinctive voice, emotive songwriting, and eclectic mix of folk, rock, and indie sounds. Born in Oxfordshire, England, on 25 November 1979 began her musical journey at a young age, developing her skills as a guitarist and lyricist. Her early work drew comparisons to artists like Joni Mitchell and Patti Smith, with a poetic and deeply personal style that resonates with listeners. Her career took off in the late 1990s with the release of her debut album Burning Dorothy (1998) but it was her 2001 album Rules for Jokers that truly put her on the map, showcasing her ability to blend traditional folk influences with contemporary indie rock. Known for her captivating stage presence, her music often explores themes of love, heartbreak, politics, social justice, and the human experience. Throughout her career, she has continued to evolve, releasing numerous albums that have made it into the Top 40, such as Regardless (2013) Ghosts and Graffiti (2015), and The Counterweight (2017). Her work has earned critical acclaim, and she has become a respected figure in the British music scene. She has also collaborated with other artists, including co-writing with British folk legend John Martyn and performing alongside artists like Mary Chapin Carpenter and James Blunt. A prolific recording artist, she released her new album These Quiet Friends in 2025.
