The Shrubs, an English rock group from Watford, was formed in 1985 by Nick Hobbs, who had previously managed Henry Cow and played with Kraeldjursanstalten before moving to London. After leaving Stump due to creative differences, Hobbs formed The Shrubs, initially called The Kevin Staples Band. Their debut release was the EP Full Steam Into the Brainstorm in July 1986 on Ron Johnson Records. The band contributed "Bullfighters Bones" to the influential C86 compilation by NME. Following the EP Blackmailer (1986), their first full-length album, Take Me Aside for a Midnight Harangue, was released in 1987. Despite challenges with label distribution, they signed with Public Domain and released their final album, Vessels of the Heart, in 1988 before disbanding. The Shrubs had two sessions on BBC Radio 1's John Peel Show.
