Biography

The Rose Of Avalanche was an English alternative rock group formed in Leeds, West Yorkshire, in 1984 by Phil Morris, Paul James Berry and Alan Davis, with Morris on guitar and vocals. The band’s first releases appeared on the local independent label LiL, where the singles "L.A. Rain" and "Goddess" entered the UK Independent Chart top 20, the former also ranking in John Peel’s Festive Fifty in 1985. After signing to Fire Records, the lineup expanded to include Glenn Schultz, Nicol McKay and Mark Thompson, and the group supported The Mission on the 1986–87 World Crusade Tour. The subsequent years saw a steady output: First Avalanche (1985), The Rose Of Avalanche (1985), Always There (1986), Too Many Castles In The Sky / Velveteen (1987), In Rock (1988), Anthology (First Avalanche / Always There) (1988), Always There + In Rock (1988), A Peace Inside E.P. (1989), String ‛A’ Beads (1990), I Believe (1990), I.C.E. (1991) and the post‑breakup compilation L.A. Rain – The Singles Album (1997). The band’s releases consistently charted on the UK Indie chart, with Always There reaching number 3 and Never Another Sunset entering the top 10. After a final live appearance in 1993, the group disbanded; a 2019 announcement indicated a planned reformation.
