Biography

The Roberta Martin Singers, an American gospel group based in Chicago, Illinois, were founded in 1933 by Roberta Martin. The group initially consisted of six young men selected from a junior choir at Ebenezer Baptist Church and was named the Martin and Frye Singers before adopting the Roberta Martin Singers moniker in 1936. Their first recording, "Precious Memories", was released in 1947. Throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s, they recorded for Religious Records of Detroit and Apollo Records, releasing notable songs such as "Old Ship of Zion" (1949) and "The Lord Will Make a Way" (1951). In 1957, the group began recording for Savoy Records, achieving success with the hit "God Specializes" (1958) featuring Gloria Griffin. The Roberta Martin Singers continued to release recordings through the 1960s, including "No Other Help I Know" (1962) and "The Failure's Not In God, It's In Me" (1964). They disbanded in 1969.
