The Rip Chords were an American vocal group formed in 1962, originally called the Opposites and composed of Ernie Bringas and Phil Stewart. After meeting at Inglewood High School, the pair secured a contract with Columbia Records in Hollywood, where they released their debut single "Here I Stand" on 17 December 1962; the track peaked at Number 51 on the Billboard Hotâ¯100 in early 1963. In 1963 the duo issued "Gone", which reached Number 88 on the national chart. By October 1963, with producers Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnston providing uncredited vocals, the group released "Hey Little Cobra", which climbed to Number 4 on the Billboard Hotâ¯100 in February 1964 and reached Number 3 on Newâ¯Zealandâs charts. The same year Columbia issued the album Hey Little Cobra and Other Hot Rod Hits, peaking at Number 56 on the Billboard album chart. In April 1964 the single "Three Window Coupe" entered the Topâ¯40 at Number 28, followed by "One Piece Topless Bathing Suit" and "Don't Be Scared" in 1964 and 1965, respectively. The group disbanded in 1965 after five singles on the Hotâ¯100 and two albums; none of the members released further Rip Chords material thereafter.
