Biography

The Rich Kids were a British new wave band from London, formed in 1977 by bassist Glen Matlock following his departure from The Sex Pistols. The initial lineup included keyboardist and guitarist Bill Smyth, drummer Rusty Egan, lead guitarist Steve New, and session player Mick Jones of The Clash. Midge Ure joined after the split of his band Slik, replacing Smyth and Jones. Their debut single "Rich Kids" reached number 24 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1978, leading to appearances on BBC shows like Top of the Pops and Revolver. The band's only studio album, Ghosts Of Princes In Towers, was released in August 1978 and peaked at number 51. Despite creative differences over musical direction, they disbanded in mid-1979. Matlock and New later toured with Iggy Pop, while Egan and Ure formed Visage. The Rich Kids reunited for a one-off concert in January 2010 to support Steve New, who passed away from cancer in May of the same year. In February 2016, the band reformed for a joint headline show with The Professionals at London's O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire.
