Biography

The Piltdown Men were an American instrumental rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 1960. The group were formed by Lincoln Mayorga and Ed Cobb, who had previously worked together in The Four Preps. Their first recordings were produced in 1960 and featured notable musicians such as Jackie Kelso on saxophone and Tommy Tedesco on bass. The band released their debut single "McDonald's Cave" / "Brontosaurus Stomp", which reached number 75 on the US charts with "Brontosaurus Stomp" as the A-side. In the UK, "McDonald's Cave" was the A-side and landed at number 14. Subsequent singles like "Piltdown Rides Again" and "Goodnight Mrs. Flintstone" also charted in the UK but had limited success in the US. The band's final single, "Night Surfin'", was recorded in 1962 with new musicians, including Dave Burgess of The Champs, but did not achieve significant success. The Piltdown Men disbanded shortly thereafter. In 1981, a compilation album titled The Piltdown Men was released on vinyl, followed by a CD edition in 1998.
