Biography
The Pan-African Orchestra, founded in 1988 in Accra, Ghana, by Nana Danso Abiam, was a 48-piece ensemble dedicated to exploring the classical foundations of traditional African music. Initially conceived while Abiam studied under Professor Kwabena Nketia at the University of Ghana, the orchestra aimed to integrate continental art forms through new compositional techniques. The group's breakthrough came with their album Opus I, released in 1995 through Real World Records, which topped the international New World Music Charts for six weeks. In 1994, they performed at the WOMAD Festival and collaborated on various projects, including a UK tour with the musical play Yaa Asantewaa - Warrior Queen in 2001 and a collaboration with kora player Tunde Jegede in 2003. Abiam died in Accra on December 24, 2014.
