Biography
The Newbeats are an American pop vocal trio formed in the 1960s, led by Larry Henley. The group consisted of Henley, Dean Mathis and Mark Mathis, who began their musical journey as children learning guitar from their mother. After playing in various bands throughout their early careers, including Paul Howard's Western swing band and Dale Hawkins' band, the Mathis brothers recorded together under the name Dean & Marc for the Chess record label. The Newbeats formed after Larry Henley joined Dean and Mark Mathis in 1959, and the group gained recognition with their hit "Bread and Butter", which reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, selling over one million copies in the United States. Following this success, they released several singles including "Run, Baby Run (Back Into My Arms)", which peaked at number 12 on the same chart. The Newbeats remained with Hickory Records until 1972 before moving to Buddah and Playboy labels briefly. Their music was rediscovered by the Northern soul movement in the early 1970s, with "Run, Baby Run (Back Into My Arms)" reaching number 10 on the UK Singles Chart. The group disbanded in 1974.
