Biography
The New Basement Tapes was a British-American musical supergroup that formed in 2014. The quintet consisted of Jim James, Elvis Costello, Marcus Mumford, Taylor Goldsmith, and Rhiannon Giddens. The ensemble was assembled by producer T Bone Burnett to record songs based on a collection of newly discovered lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1967. Their only studio album, Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, was released (2014) through the labels Electromagnetic Recordings and Harvest Records. The recording featured a collaborative process where the members frequently swapped vocal and instrumental roles. During the production, the group was the subject of the Showtime documentary Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued (2014), directed by Sam Jones. The film included an exclusive interview with Dylan and featured an appearance by Johnny Depp, who contributed guitar to the track âKansas Cityâ.
