Biography

The Mizell Brothers, consisting of Larry Mizell and Alphonso "Fonce" Mizell, were an American record producing team from the United States. Born on February 17, 1944, and January 15, 1943 respectively, both brothers earned degrees in engineering and music at Howard University, where they formed a jazz vocal quartet called The Vanlords. In the early 1970s, they moved to California and established Sky High Productions, producing albums for Blue Note Records that significantly influenced jazz fusion. Their notable collaborations include works with Johnny Hammond Smith, Roger Glenn, The Blackbyrds, and Donald Byrd. Larry Mizell also contributed to NASA's Apollo program as an electrical engineer. In the 1980s, they retired from the record industry but returned in the 2000s. Alphonso Mizell passed away on July 5, 2011.
