Biography

The British jazz-funk outfit Beggar & Co. was formed in 1980 in the United Kingdom by Kenny Wellington, David Baptiste, and Neville 'Breeze' McKrieth, originally members of Light of the World. The band's debut single "(Somebody) Help Me Out" entered the UK Singles Chart on February 7, 1981, peaking at number 15. Their follow-up release, "Mule (Chant No. 2)", reached number 37 in September of the same year. Beggar & Co.'s debut album Monument was released later in 1981. Throughout the decade they released notable singles such as "Anybody See My Trial" in 1983 and a re-release of their debut single titled "London Town '85" / "(Somebody) Help Me Out" in 1985. The band also contributed as a featured brass section on several chart records, including Spandau Ballet's hit single "Chant No. 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On)". In 2007, Beggar & Co. released the live album Brass, Strings N' Things. In 2012 they released their album Sleeping Giants, and subsequently became part of the Brit Funk Association alongside original members of Hi Tension, releasing collaborative albums Full Circle in 2018 and Lifted in 2020. The band's self-titled album was released in 2021 on Expansion Records.
