Biography

The Lounge Lizards started out in 1981 in New York City as a pet project of the well-known musical siblings John and Evan Lurie. Initially conceived as a tongue-in-cheek jazz combo playing for downtown New York arty types, the band's first album 'Lounge Lizards' was really a showcase for John Lurie's intricate arrangements and compositions which drew influences from many genres outside jazz. The band have always enjoyed a fluid line-up of invariably excellent players based around the core of the two brothers, both of whom have remained a constant during the band's history. The lengthy roster of past members includes many members of the New York jazz community and features name like Steve Bernstein, Mauro Refesco and Tony Scherr. With just four studio albums recorded during the 17 years the band was active, The Lounge Lizards remain an enigmatic footnote to New York's rich musical history. 'Lounge Lizards' is the critic's favourite which many fans of the band believe was never surpassed by subsequent recordings.
